If something problematic has ended up in REAPER's cache and is causing crashes even on fully up to date software, it can be cleared from the VST settings.
In the VST settings page in the REAPER Preferences, click the "Re-scan..." button and choose "Clear cache and re-scan VST paths for all plug-ins"
(This may take a little bit of time depending on how many plug-ins you have installed.)
